The LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration released GWTC-5.0, adding 161 new detections from the O4b observing run (April 2024 – January 2025) and bringing the total to 390 confirmed gravitational wave events. The standout signal is GW250114, a binary black hole merger of 32 + 34 solar masses at ~1.3 billion light-years, with a record signal-to-noise ratio of 77–80 — roughly 3× clearer than the historic GW150914 that started it all. This extraordinary clarity enabled the first detection of multiple ringdown tones from the merged Kerr black hole remnant, confirming Hawking's black hole area theorem to 99.999% confidence. The catalog also reveals a previously hidden population of black holes emerging from the growing dataset.

JWST targeted GLIMPSE-17775, a "little red dot" at redshift z = 3.5 (~1.8 billion years after the Big Bang), using the galaxy cluster Abell S1063 as a gravitational lens to amplify 30 hours of observation into 80 effective hours. The resulting spectrum revealed over 40 emission lines — including 16 iron lines — at unprecedented resolution. The key discovery: electron scattering in dense ionized gas, not Doppler motion, broadens the spectral lines, meaning initial mass estimates were 10–100× too high. These are young supermassive black holes shrouded in thick cocoons of gas, not impossibly massive monsters.

MAY 2026MAYO 2026 SCIENCE NEWS
Two supermassive black holes with a combined mass of 60 billion solar masses were identified in the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 402, located approximately 4.4 billion light-years away. The pair has carved out a massive starless cavity spanning ~3,200 light-years at the galaxy's core — an empty dark region where their gravitational slingshot has ejected virtually all stars. This is double the mass of the next most massive binary system known. Note: this is not yet a direct detection but is inferred from the cavity dynamics and stellar velocity measurements.

Using observations from April 5 and 10, 2017, the EHT resolved two distinct shock structures in the jet of binary black hole system OJ 287: a fast shock rotating at 3.7°/day counter-clockwise and a slower one at 2.5°/day clockwise. The data revealed a helical pressure wavelength of ~100 microarcseconds (~1.5 light-years), confirming a tightly wound magnetic helix threading the jet. The same campaign pinpointed M87*'s jet base at ~0.09 light-years from the black hole, while the visible jet extends over 3,000 light-years. Published January 2026 in Astronomy & Astrophysics. The quasar eFEDS J084222.9+001000 at redshift z = 3.4 (~12 billion years old, when the universe was less than 1.5 billion years old) is accreting matter at approximately 13 times the Eddington limit — one of the most extreme growth rates ever measured. It is a rare X-ray-detected, radio-loud quasar identified across four major observatories: Subaru, Chandra, XMM-Newton, and eROSITA. The extreme feeding rate may help explain how supermassive black holes grew so rapidly in the early cosmos.

A dormant supermassive black hole weighing 36 × 10⁹ solar masses (~10,000× Sgr A*) was measured in the foreground lens galaxy of the Cosmic Horseshoe Einstein ring system, approximately 5 billion light-years away. The lens sits at redshift z = 0.44, with the background source at z = 2.381. Two independent methods converged: gravitational lensing modeling and stellar kinematics (~400 km/s velocity dispersion). Unlike active quasars, this black hole is dormant — no accretion disk, no jets — making its mass measurement especially remarkable.

JWST's COSMOS-Web survey discovered a ~1 million solar mass black hole at redshift z = 1.14, nestled between the nuclei of two colliding disk galaxies. The system contains 3 active black holes, and the central one appears to have formed via direct gas cloud collapse — the long-theorized "heavy seed" mechanism that can produce black holes up to 1 million M☉ without requiring a stellar precursor. Confirmed through multiwavelength data from JWST, Keck, Chandra, and the VLA. JWST weighed a dormant supermassive black hole of ~6 × 10⁹ solar masses in galaxy MRG-M0138 at redshift z ≈ 2, over 10 billion light-years away — 15× farther than the previous record for a dormant black hole mass measurement. The quenched galaxy was magnified ~30× by gravitational lensing, enabling JWST to resolve stellar motions in this otherwise unreachable target. Despite its enormous mass, it shows no accretion disk, no quasar activity, and no jets — it has simply gone quiet.

MAY 2025MAYO 2025 EHT COLLABORATION
The EHT achieved the highest-resolution ground-based VLBI observations ever at 0.87 mm wavelength (345 GHz), delivering 50% sharper resolution than the original M87* and Sgr A* images — with a theoretical full-array resolution of ~13 microarcseconds (equivalent to reading a bottle cap on the Moon). The key challenge is atmospheric water vapor, which severely distorts signals at this frequency. The breakthrough "frequency phase transfer" (FPT) technique bootstraps calibration from 86 → 230 → 345 GHz, enabling stable coherence. First successful 345 GHz VLBI fringes were achieved in August 2024, with FPT coherence demonstrated in March 2025. This opens "color vision" — multi-frequency imaging of black hole shadows.

An analog gravity experiment has for the first time observed a simulated black hole "evaporate" — producing the closest direct analog of Hawking radiation ever achieved in a laboratory setting. The experiment uses a specially engineered system to create an event horizon analog, where quantum fluctuations at the boundary produce pairs of particles, with one escaping as thermal radiation — exactly as Stephen Hawking predicted in 1974. This result brings us one step closer to confirming that real black holes radiate and eventually evaporate. Published in Nature.

ALMA discovered massive turbulent structures — dubbed "space tornadoes" — swirling around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. Despite Sgr A*'s relatively quiet X-ray emission, these violent sub-millimeter-wave structures reveal a far more dynamic and chaotic environment than previously suspected. The tornadoes may play a key role in regulating how matter accretes onto the black hole and in shaping the magnetic field geometry of the surrounding accretion flow.ALMA descubrio enormes estructuras turbulentas — apodadas "tornados espaciales" — arremolinandose alrededor de Sagitario A*, el agujero negro supermasivo en el centro de la Via Lactea.
